This is a beautiful flower. Did you know it originates in South Africa? I grew up on a farm there, and in Autumn time they would flourish in the fields before planting time. They are actually regarded as a weed to farmers, as they just grow and take over everything. I just know that they are BEAUTIFUL and my horses loved them :) They came in white, pink and almost maroon colour.... I will put photos up soon which I have taken in fields when I still lived there. It's a sight to behold. You're photos are great!

Thank you so much for the information, much appreciated. I thought I read somewhere that these flowers are coming from the Americas.

Fields of them? That must be stunning

I'm putting up a picture of the field now where I grew up on my farm in South Africa - it's really beautiful. The plants were so tall though, that I couldn't get high enough to get a great picture! Feel free to check it out!

Thank you very much,

I hope you like other flowers as well and if you do maybe you like the ones in my gallery =D

But if you don't like other flowers, or just not the ones in my gallery (haha), that is fine as well

Thanks for the nice comment (and favorite)

It's definitely a good thing. In fact, I'll share the story that cemented this flower and my mother forever in my memory:
When I lived in California, I owned a landscape maintenance business and my mother was my employee (although more like a partner). I did all the hard stuff and she did the pruning of roses and other light-duty work. We planted cosmos flowers in the front flower bed of one of the shopping centers we maintained (our favorite because we always shopped there). At the end of the summer, one cosmos plant had gotten so huge and beautiful but eventually it's season ended and it needed to be pulled up. My mother had gotten so attached to it (pruning it with love all summer) and she actually cried when I pulled it up. Afterwards, we laughed about it and how silly it was to cry about it...but now whenever I see a cosmos I think about that day. :D

The first thing that strikes me is how nicely the black background adds to and brings out the flower itself.

The petals are beautifully captured with no white glare and are nicely creased leading down to the nice soft stamen in the middle. :)
